Nothing inspires patriotic state pride more than rising to the playing of its anthem, saluting its flag, and honoring its...uhh...state germ? While most think of microbes as being instigators of disease, all of us educated folk here at half human.org of course know better! Streptomyces, a bacteria that has actually saved millions of lives, is actually being promoted as the new state microbe of New Jersey.

Interesting. I am a microbiologist living in Jersey...and while I knew about the history with Streptomyces, I didn't know about its pending "status."

Ha! Right? I'm thinking I need to come up with a state bacteria for my home Mississippi. If nothing else, it might look good on my college applications! :)

I don't know about a Mississippi bacteria, but I'm pretty sure you guys do need a new state flag. Maybe you could design one with a big bacterium on it and kill two birds with one stone!
